Rangers ready to sell Liverpool target

Rangers are preparing to sell Nickica Jelavic.

With Liverpool, Everton, Sunderland, West Brom and Queens Park Rangers all credited with an interest in Jelavic, it increasingly seems a matter of when, rather than if, the Croatian departs for England's top flight.

It is understood Rangers' initial asking price is £10million, although they might have to compromise significantly if a deal is to be struck.

Liverpool target £17m Brazilian

Liverpool are reportedly considering a January raid on Chelsea midfield target Fernando Reges.

The 24-year-old FC Porto star has emerged as one of a number of players in the position who is of interested to the club, according to The Daily Mail, with Celtic's Beram Kayal another player on the club's transfer radar.

With a long-term injury to Brazilian international Lucas Leiva and skipper Steven Gerrard not yet back to match fitness at Liverpool, the Anfield outfit are said to be in the market for a player in the 'anchor role'.

The same paper reported earlier in the month that manager Kenny Dalglish was considering a £17 million move for the player, with Liverpool scouts sent to watch the player in a 0-0 Champions League draw against Zenit St Petersburg.

Seydou Keita and Yann M'Vila have also been speculatively linked with a move to Merseyside by various sources, and it remains to be seen if the Liverpool boss will indeed turn to the transfer market, with funds expected to be made available by owners FSG.

As for Chelsea, their interest in Fernando stems back to the summer following Andre Villas-Boas' arrival from the Estádio do Dragão.

The ex-Porto boss was linked with a number of former players from the Primeira Liga champions, with Hulk, Alvaro Pereira, Radamel Falcao and Joao Moutinho also tipped to follow their manager to Stamford Bridge at the time.

Whilst none of the aforementioned four made the move to Chelsea, Fernando was another to be linked and one of the few that are still being linked with the switch to west London.

Competition is already fierce at the club in the position though, with John Obi-Mikel, Michael Essien and Oriol Romeu fighting for one place in a midfield three at the club. Whether Fernando can add to that mix remains a decision for the Chelsea boss to make in the coming days.

Kenny Dalglish was reportedly considering a move for the Real Madrid midfielder as cover for the injured Lucas and the fragile Steven Gerrard.

Blackburn were also hoping to take the former Spain U21 international on loan for the rest of the season in what would have been an audacious coup for Steve Kean's struggling side.

Jose Mourinho has told the 24-year-old he is surplus to requirements at the Bernabeu but they are unwilling to let the former Getafe man leave on loan and would prefer to recoup some of the £4m they paid for him in 2009.

LIVERPOOL LEGENDS LEAD TRIBUTES FOR ABLETT

Former Liverpool captain Alan Hansen has led the tributes to a 'great' team-mate, whose death has left him and several other members of the 1980s squad 'distraught'.

'He was a lovely guy and he was quite unassuming and everyone loved him,' said the ex-Scotland international. 'It is such a shock even though we knew he was ill. I texted him on December 7 to go and see him and have a cup of tea and he texted back to say he had a doctor's appointment but wished me a merry Christmas and said he would see me in the new year.

'Then we get the news this morning and we are absolutely stunned and cannot believe this has happened.

'He came into the dressing room when Liverpool had one of the great teams and he was right in there because he was a top-class player as well,' he told Radio 5 Live.

'He was a dedicated, consummate professional but he was right at the top of the tree.'

David Fairclough, who played for Liverpool between 1974 and 1983, said: 'He was a lovely lad, he always conducted himself in the right way. He was great with people, always personable. What always came through with Gary was his attitude was just always very, very right.'

Former Liverpool and Germany midfielder Dietmar Hamann, who became Stockport manager in 2011 a year after Ablett left the post, said on Sky Sports News: 'It's devastating news. He's a very highly regarded and respected man on Merseyside and a true legend.'

Paul Walsh, who played alongside Ablett at Liverpool in the 1980s, described the news of Ablett's death as 'absolutely tragic'.

He said: ''I'm absolutely stunned at the news, I knew he wasn't well, but 46 years of age is absolutely tragic.'

'He was was a hell of a nice person. He was a top lad. Just wanted to get in there and do well, didn't do anything fancy but a great pro who trained hard with a great attitude to everything he did.

'There was also a steely determination about Gary. You don't get in the Liverpool team and come through the ranks at Liverpool and play 100 times for them if you haven't got that little bit of steel.'

Michael Owen said on his Twitter account: 'So sad to hear the news that Gary Ablett has passed away today aged 46. He played for some great clubs and had a career to be proud of. RIP.'

Robbie Fowler tweeted: 'Really sad news regarding Gary Ablett,Deepest sympathy to all his family, was an absolute gentleman and will be missed by many.Rest in peace pal.'
